New to the Choir

NOTEABILITY JOINING NOTES – Sept 2023

General

NoteAbility is a community choir based in St Austell. There are no entry criteria other than a desire to sing, enjoy rehearsals and performing for audiences. There is no need to be able to read music, although this is clearly an advantage.

Entry information

Prospective members are invited to attend for a series of four practice sessions. This period is to allow you to decide if the choir feels right for you, and also allows existing members to decide whether you would fit into the choir. The decision of the choir is influenced largely by the kind of voice you have, as we often have plenty of singers in one of the sections but might be short in another. As we sing mainly in 4-part harmony, you would be invited to sing along with the most appropriate section(s) to suit your voice in your 4-week trial period. If all goes well, and there is a vacancy in the section you would like to join, you would be invited to join the choir, or to join the waiting list if your section does not have a vacancy.

Waiting list

The Musical Director makes decisions on new members bearing in mind the need to keep a balance between the sections.

Subscriptions

Members pay a monthly subscription. At present it is £14 per month but this is subject to change. The treasurer will supply information on how to set up a Standing Order. There is an option to pay by cheque if that suits you better. The account details for subscriptions are: NoteAbility Chorus 30-97-28   42281568

Tea/coffee/biscuits

Members take it in turn to provide tea and coffee for the intervals at practice sessions. The tea rota is maintained by Lesley Dibb, who will allocate dates, or you are welcome to select an appropriate date.

Rehearsals and concerts

We practice at 7pm at St Augustine of Hippo which is very near to Asda in St Austell. Concerts are given to various groups throughout the area. We encourage new members to participate in these as soon as they feel comfortable about the repertoire. The choir is working towards performing without words or music, so you would be encouraged to make use of the teaching tracks available on our website to become familiar with our songs.

Uniform

The choir uniform is quite simple. We supply members (at cost) with a turquoise scarf. Members purchase their own turquoise top - it is probably best to chat with an existing member for guidance. Typically, we wear black bottoms (trousers or skirts) and a turquoise top.
